HARDWARE / 5 MIN READ

Choose VoIP Hardware With Context.

Choose the endpoint role first, then confirm the exact model and service workflow.

Start With the Role, Not the Brand

A desk SIP phone is a network endpoint. A cordless DECT handset needs a compatible base station to reach the IP network. A USB or Bluetooth headset is an audio accessory for a computer or a supported phone workflow; Bluetooth by itself does not make it a SIP phone.

Confirm the service provider or PBX supports the exact model, firmware, provisioning method, and features you need. A vendor compatibility or certification list can be useful, but it is provider- and version-specific rather than proof that every device works with every service.

Examples appear in alphabetical model order. They are not rankings, recommendations, or hands-on testing.

Desk SIP phone

Poly Edge E220

A wired desk endpoint with two gigabit Ethernet ports and IEEE 802.3af PoE support. Its setup still depends on a provider or PBX that supports the device and its provisioning method.

For call-quality work, record the phone, media direction, and affected interval before changing network settings. Read the call-statistics field note →

Cordless IP/DECT handset system

Snom M70 + M900

The M70 is the handset; it registers through a compatible DECT base. This example pairs two components, not a guaranteed retail bundle. The M900 is a multicell base, so base placement, coverage, handset compatibility, and the provider or PBX configuration are separate checks.

For a roaming or coverage complaint, separate handset, wireless coverage, and media-path evidence. Read the troubleshooting field note →

USB / Bluetooth headset

Yealink BH70

A Bluetooth headset for a computer or supported phone accessory workflow, with USB-A or USB-C dongle variants and UC or Teams variants. It is not a SIP phone; confirm the exact variant and call-control support with the calling platform.

For echo, feedback, or low volume, use a headset as one controlled isolation step rather than a diagnosis. Read the troubleshooting field note →

Three Checks Before an Order or Rollout

  1. Connection and power: verify Ethernet, Wi-Fi, DECT coverage, PoE class, adapters, and charging needs against the location—not just the product page. Match the handset and base to the same supported region and check which accessories are included.
  2. Calling workflow: distinguish a standalone SIP endpoint from a PC softphone headset or a handset/base system. For a USB/Bluetooth headset, check the exact UC or Teams variant, dongle/USB connector, operating system, and call-control behavior.
  3. Service and support: ask the provider or administrator about approved device lists, provisioning, emergency-calling policy, support boundaries, and any service, seat, device-management, or calling-plan entitlement that is separate from the hardware.

Keep Troubleshooting Evidence Small and Specific

When a new endpoint has trouble, collect the device model and firmware, connection type, approximate call time, direction of the symptom, and one controlled comparison. Do not paste SIP credentials, phone numbers, call recordings, or full logs into a support request.

Use the field troubleshooting checklist for choppy audio, one-way media, echo, or setup failures. Use the call-statistics guide when you have endpoint measurements to interpret.
